Australia - Day 8 - Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

27th December, 2008.

We had a lot of fun today visiting the Currumbin Willdlife Sanctuary.  We hopped a local bus to get here.  While in line to buy tickets, we were "marketed" an opportunity to ride zip lines and participate in a fun-filled, adrenaline-packed time in the "Extreme Green" experience.  (Or some name like that...I don't remember the actual name of it.)  Sounds like fun, but we waited to buy our tickets there.  The park was a fairly typical "zoo" except it didn't have a great map, and stuff was quite far apart.  A few highlights from the day:  David enjoyed playing in the park.  Devin laughed at the kangaroo "herd" that went running past us.  I thought we were all going to get run over, but they were agile enough to avoid us.  Impressive.  And my favorite part of the day was the Aboriginal Dance Performance.  (Video here...and as usual, it's quite long.  Be patient.)  The performance included some didgeridoo, along with some dancing.  It was a great show, even if one of the dancers didn't seem all that "authentic."

A few pictures from the day are below.  Click on the image to see a larger version.

The train that takes you around the park.  (I took this picture for you, mom.)

David and Devin riding the train.

And since Devin says there aren't enough pictures of me here...I'll add this one.  Zinc oxide and all...  (Gotta keep my nose from getting sunburned.)

A white-billed Ibis.

A gecko that was lounging outside the park area.

The dance performance.
(This was the highlight of the day for me.)

A "Wildlife Encounter" with one of the venomous snakes of Australia.

One of the kangaroos just relaxin' in the sanctuary.  Tough life...

And yet one more kangaroo...this one with a little joey in her pouch.
