Australia - Day 7 - South Stradbroke Island

26th December, 2008.

Today is "Boxing Day" in Australia.  And I asked at least a half-dozen locals what Boxing Day was and got various responses from "I don't know" to "Another excuse to hang out with friends and put one back."  I'm still not sure what it is...as I type this I don't have internet, so I can't even Google it to find out.  Oh well.

We had a fun day today.  We caught a ferry out to South Stradbroke Island for some fun in the sun.  The highlight for David was the Sand Tobogganing.  (See a video here.  It's kind of long, so give it time to download.)  The highlight for Lowell was riding the Jet Ski.  And the yabby pumping.  Yes, yabby pumping.  The highlight for Devin was just relaxing by the pool and watching her two boys have fun.

So I know at this point you're asking the question, "What the heck is yabby pumping?"  Well, I wondered the same thing when I saw it on the agenda for the day by the reception area of the island resort we visited.  Turns out that yabbies are a small shrimp that lives in the sand and at low tide, you can "pump" them out of the sand to collect them.  They are used for bait for fishing.

A few pictures from the day are below.  Click on the image to see a larger version.

Woohoo!

How was it David?

David took this "artsy" picture of his sunglasses.  I thought it looked cool.

And there's a yabby!
