Visit to the Island of Koh Chang, October 2008

For our October trip, we decided to stay more local.  (Translation, we decided to save money.)  So we visited a beautiful island off the coast of Thailand called Koh Chang.  It's in eastern Thailand near the border with Cambodia.  Travel to the island involves a ferry from the city of Trat.

Last year much of my writing about our vacations involved quite a bit of adventure and a touch of comedy.  (At least my attempts at comedy.)  We always seemed to have obstacles to overcome.  Of course some of these obstacles were issues with our planning, etc. and some were simply those funny situations that happen when traveling in a foreign country.  I'm sad to say that this will be a fairly boring trip report.  I don't have much in the way of fun stories or insights into a culture we've never encountered before.  Koh Chang is a beautiful island that is very rugged, and will therefore never be fully developed.  However, there are stretches of the island that are already "touristy" and decked out for us outsiders.  But much of the island still seems to have that "old world charm" that seems cliche but ever so real here.  At the conclusion of our trip, we all agreed that we'd like to come back and see more of the island.  This time we spent a lot of our days (except Lowell's SCUBA diving...see pictures of the diving here) sitting by the pool relaxing.  Not that sitting by the pool relaxing is a bad thing, but we certanily didn't venture out to explore as much as we normally do.  I'm convinced part of this is that we were in a familiar country, even if we were in a new vacation spot.  The hotel we stayed at was nice enough, but the food was very expensive.  This created a great situation for us:  Local food!  We found a nice little breakfast spot on the street right in front of the hotel.  We also tried some of the local restaurants for dinner.  Always fun, I must say.

So, I don't know what else to add.  There are pictures below.

Our ferry.  Not much for plush accomodations, but it got the job done.

Beautiful sunset while on the ferry.  (I'm sure my picture just doesn't do it justice.)

The pool.  David's favorite place for the week.

Our shoes lined up in the hotel room.  (I'm sure Devin would want to clarify that this is Lowell's picture...not hers.)

David got to paint a T-shirt.  This is the back.

David also got to paint some batik.

Scuba gear by the pool for a scuba class.  Lowell was jealous of the divers... (But he got to dive later.  See pictures here.)
